As an IFS therapist, I have seen depression show up in a lot of different ways. Sometimes a person cannot get out of bed consistently, or adequately care for themselves or others, or get to work regularly. Other times, a depressed person is functioning in their daily lives, but feeling empty and hopeless inside. And often, the symptoms of depression ebb and flow. It’s not the same every day or week. Someone might feel mostly okay, but have a deeper feeling of unhappiness or persistent loneliness.

Julia’s style has been described by clients as warm and relational. It is important to her that she shows up as a therapist with authenticity and “realness,” as she believes that the therapist-client relationship itself is often a powerful vehicle for change. Her approach is non-pathologizing and rooted in attachment work; for her, this means recognizing that we are wired for connection and understanding the ways that our early childhood experiences impact us throughout our lives. She tries to inject the “talk” portion of therapy with opportunities for mindfulness, which often manifests as invitations to slow down and notice what’s happening in the body. She also hopes to honor each person’s experiences of power and privilege at the intersection of their identities, noticing the ways that various systems influence one’s external and internal landscapes.
